2008 Tenant Recycling and Eco-Awareness Competition Winner
Travelocity, Sabre Company:
At Travelocity, we believe travel is transformative and can shift a traveler's perspective to affect the vitality of communities, places, and people. We believe in travel as an agent for positive change and can help make the world a “greener” place.
For us, “going green” starts from the inside out. Internally we are building upon a strong culture of sustainability, starting with our LEED certified headquarters in Southlake, Texas and extending to our leased facilities around the world – including San Francisco at 303 Second Street.
When Travelocity entered the 303 Second Street recycling competition, we focused our efforts on three key areas; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Here is what we did:
Reduce
1) Reduced from 12 to 5 printers in the office and reconfigured all printers by default to duplex and low toner usage for paper and toner consumption
2) Replaced 12 CRT/VGA monitors with flat screens to reduce power consumption
3) Eliminated one snack vending machine and one office toast appliance
4) Employee communication (email and signage) to encourage use of multi-function devices for scanning, faxing from LAN connection to use less paper
4) Employee communication encouraging (email and 3 in-person all-hands meeting sessions) less paper for internal meetings, fewer paper or plastic items during the course of the day, diligence about turning off lights, printers, coffee machines, etc. as they leave the office in the evening
Reuse
1) Employee Communication on best practices for re-use of recyclable materials before actually taking to a recycling bin
2) Encouraged employees to use coffee mugs and food containers that could be washed and reused instead of disposable items.
Recycle
1) Placed paper-only recycling bins by each printer
2) Recycling bin in common areas with signage to communicate best practices and to direct recyclable items to the proper bin
3) Employee communication (email and 3 in-person sessions) on the entire plan to gain a better understanding and to encourage implementation through buy-in
4) Launch of employee drive to eliminate paper, documents, brochures and folders in a special bin or box
5) New purchasing behaviors for paper and plastic product supply in office
6) Employee training on which items can be recycled (which is a lot more than most realized) |
